MCAT

About the MCAT

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, computer-based exam conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Medical schools in the USA, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean Islands use MCAT scores as part of their admissions process. Anyone aspiring to pursue an MD degree in the US or Canada must take the MCAT.

The test evaluates a candidate’s scientific knowledge, reasoning skills, and critical thinking ability, which are essential for success in medical education. Recognized by health professions and graduate schools, the MCAT is offered more than 20 times a year at authorized test centers worldwide.

MCAT Eligibility

Students planning a career in medicine or health-related fields can take the MCAT. It is required for admission to programs such as:

  • Allopathic Medicine
  • Osteopathic Medicine
  • Podiatric Medicine
  • Veterinary Medicine

International students (outside the US and Canada) pursuing or holding an MBBS degree do not need any special permission to appear for the MCAT.

Most US medical schools offer MD degrees, and applicants must hold an undergraduate degree before applying. Typically, candidates are expected to have completed the following prerequisite coursework:

  • Biology: 1 year
  • Physics: 1 year
  • English: 1 year
  • Chemistry (including Organic Chemistry): 2 years

MCAT Registration

MCAT registration is available only online through the AAMC website.

Registration process:

  1. Create an AAMC account using your full name, email address, and gender.
  2. Log in with your AAMC User ID and password to access your MCAT dashboard.
  3. Complete and submit the online registration form.
  4. Receive a confirmation email with full exam details.

It is recommended to register at least 60 days before your preferred test date to ensure seat availability.

MCAT Exam Pattern

The MCAT lasts approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes, including breaks, with about 6 hours and 15 minutes of actual testing time.

The exam consists of four main sections:

  1. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
  2. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
  3. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
  4. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS)

MCAT Scoring

Each MCAT section is scored on a scale of 118 to 132, with a mean and median score of 125.
The total MCAT score ranges from 472 to 528, with the average score being 500.

This scoring scale emphasizes the central performance range, ensuring a balanced evaluation rather than focusing solely on top scores.

When setting your score goals, review the average or minimum MCAT scores accepted by your target medical schools.
